Deanne Sowter

Associate at BSLSC Since 2014

Deanne joined BSLSC in 2014 and specializes in family law. With a focus on negotiated settlements, Deanne appreciates the importance of working with clients to avoid conflict and the experience of prolonged litigation, and to try to find creative solutions to enable clients to move forward.

Deanne is the 2015 / 16 OBA Foundation Chief Justice of Ontario Fellow in Legal Ethics and Professionalism Studies. Her research looks at the links between research and practice, as shaped by the academic research and codes that govern ethics and professionalism in family law ADR. Her research is supported by The Winkler Institute for Dispute Resolution.

Before joining BSLSC Deanne summered and articled at a full service Bay Street firm. While on secondment to Equality Effect, Deanne had the opportunity to assist in making legal history working with Fiona Sampson on the Kenyan constitutional claim girl rape victims brought against the Kenyan government.

The case established that the police failure to enforce existing defilement laws, and the police failure to protect the victims from defilement, is a violation of domestic and international human rights law.

During law school Deanne won the Albert Weisbrot QC Prize for highest standing in an Advanced Family Law course, as well as the Charles Edward Woodrow Award and the Goodmans LLP Award, both for academic excellence. She also served as the president of the Osgoode Mature Student Association. Prior to becoming a lawyer Deanne worked in the film industry for 13 years.

Deanne is trained in Collaborative Family Law and is a member of the Ontario Bar Association, Collaborative Practice Toronto, the International Academy of Collaborative Professionals and the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts. Her research interests lie in the areas of family law, professional ethics, alternative dispute resolution, and access to justice.
